Hi J,

Telecom no longer offers the cable TV option as this was closed down with First Media. However there are other content providors looking at offering streaming video over the ADSL network in the future. Ihug offers a range of TV channels via its Starnet service and is looking at potentially delivering those over ADSL as well I believe (personal statement - not official Telecom!). Ihug and several other ISP's are currently evaluating ADSL and I am coming to Wellington next week to train the customer care people of Paradise Net, who have just signed up to offer ADSL to their customers.

The Nokia M10 modem can be connected to an ethernet hub and service an entire LAN of 250+ computers.

The copper cable carrying the ADSL also carries a standard voice circuit with no effect on the ADSL data transmission. You can even send a fax or connect a dial up modem while simultaneously surfing the web via ADSL. The only slight limitation will be the top end speed of a 56K dial up modem operating on that line. The downstream speed will be limited to approximately 40kbps because the low pass filter that separates the voice circuit from the ADSL trims off the upper frequency bands used by 56K modems.

The Internal modem provides exactly the same service as the Nokia M10 except it requires some third party proxy software to provide services to a LAN. The Nokia M10 is an external box that you can plug directly into an ethernet hub while the internal card is inherently installed in one system. However you can set that machine up as a proxy server / gateway and configure it to pass on the requests from other systems on the LAN. This software is available in various forms on the web but is not supplied by Telecom.

I have also sent this message to an ADSL mailing list that a number of ADSL users are contributing to. If you wish to join this list send an email to....

I hope this helps.

As I remembered from before in the trial, the multi-function modem
on my phone line gave me these capabilities:

1. Up to 3 PCs via Ethernet cards (permanent connection)
2. Cable TV outlet (with video selection)
3. Phone Line (can't remember if 1 or 2)

My Question is ..... If I go to the internal modem, do I only get
an Internet connection, or do I have the other features too?

My assumption is that the firewall is harder to setup than you first
thought. The firewall would give me good protection against
someone trying to hack my PC. So am I to assume that if you can get the
external modem to work would I have added safety and functionality.

Does the internal modem "only give me a fast Internet connection", if
this is the case, then I
hope the cost is affordably cheaper than the combination of facilities
the previous external system gave me.

Re the Wingate software I hope this is easy to install etc.

This guinea pig yet feels like changing Doctors and hospitals ;-> .

Regards

JB
