Funnily enough in my position Dan I happen to do that on a regular basis ;)
Lets not confuse the ISP charge with the Telco charge, I know the current
ADSL situation being only Telecom/XTRA makes the whole thing kind of cloudy
but at the end of the day, the ISP charges you for Internet IP, the Telco
charges you for delivering it.
AFAIK - One of two things is going to happen at the end of the second phase
of Telecoms ADSL trials.
1. The .35c is going to be broken up into some for the ISP, some for Telecom
(because as we know, no ISP is going to provide unlimited traffic for $40 -
which is what it would seem if all .35c goes to Telecom).
2. As suggested by others on this forum as well, the Telecom component drops
dramatically leaving the part of the bill that makes significant variance
being the ISP charge.
Some ISP's bill a fixed rate per meg (whatever the traffic is), Some do it
by splitting national and international into different rates, some go
further than this and split it into traffic coming in and traffic going out,
and some still further by time of day as well. Some make a allowance for
traffic between certain locations (we call it 'local') to not be charged at
all.
I sure hope we find out sooner rather than later what happens anyway, its
either going to be a exciting future for High Speed internet where many can
afford to use it or one where hardly anyone can afford it. I have to add my
0.02c on this one as well, anyone who is happy to spend $100 or so on
Internet is not the average plod who might be lucky to pull more than 300
megs...
