I certainly agree that lpr printing is in general a very good solution,
particularly if you have an HP Jetdirect or Axis print server. (but try
sharing the Jetdirect reliably with NT and a UNIX print server! You
generally end up having to spool to one or the other in the end.)

In this case however, I would be personally be a bit uncomfortable having
such a service open to the 'net. I guess I'm paid to be paranoid!

I would tend to look at a solution that tunnelled the print job through the
remote terminal session. This could be done with PPTP, but in this
instance, I personally would be looking towards upgrading to Win2K Terminal
Services or Citrix Metaframe on top of NT4 TSE.

Both support local devices, and both offer encryption. The Citrix option
would be a bit more expensive, but offer some nice extra fuctionality (Like
session shadowing, load balancing, application publishing enhancements, ICA
protocol support for multimedia etc.).

However, it's up do everyone to make their own assessment of the pro's and
cons and potential risks of a given implementation.
