The whole cable modem service (above the wire level) including your PCs
connection runs one layer lower, at the Ethernet level. In the same way as
a normal Ethernet LAN switch "knows" (actually learns) the MAC addresses
connected to each of its ports, the cable modem works the same way.

Again, this is all run a layer lower than you'd normally expect for a
wide-area connection. And it's _really_ different to an ADSL connection.
