It's not Telecom changing the ADSL standard, it's ITU which has now cast
G.DMT or G.992.1 & 2 in stone. Telecom and other telcos have to follow ITU
standards (I think).

Possibly. External ones will always work under any Ethernet-capable OS, but
internal ones require OS drivers which may or may not have been written.
