Darryl,
Just set the machines with their static IPs. The DHCP server should ping each IP
address before it hands it out to make sure that it is not already in use and
when it receives the ping back, it will just use the next address.
I can only see the being a problem when a client is assigned a DHCP address
while the static IP machines are turned off (and therefore when they start up
TCP/IP setup will fail because of another MAC address on the LAN with that
TCP/IP address).
I guess the other way would be to do all your statics between say 192.168.1.1
and 192.168.1.50 and set the DHCP server to only assign addresses between
192.168.1.51 and 192.168.1.253 (assuming you're using the factory standard
192.168.1.0/24 network on the Eth0 interface on the M11).
