Extracted from a note from a UK netizen (seen on the 'net):

"The broadband ADSL service is a scandal; and the failure of competition
from rival outfits like the cable companies is another scandal. Only today,
I received email from a reader in Sweden. For him ADSL is terribly old hat;
he wouldn't be grateful for it. He describes the ADSL service in Sweden as a
partial vacuum -- it sucks, he says. It only provides 512 Kbits upstream
(256K in the UK) and a miserable 8 megabits down (512K in the UK).

No, no, what he has is an Ethernet connection direct over gigabit fibre
cable to his ISP. The block of flats he lives in provides 10 megabits in
both directions to each apartment.

Naturally, this advanced service comes at a price. Where in the UK we get
away with a trivial £40 a month for our ADSL (when we can get it) my Swedish
reader has to fork out the princely sum of 225 Swedish Kroner. Erm, that's
about £16 per month."

Food for thought :-)
