To keep things in perspective, PacBell charge US $39.95/month flat rate -
$59.95 if you want a "guaranteed" minimum of 1.5Mb/s (up to 6Mb/s under
the proverbial optimal connectivity), or if you want 4 static IP
addresses.

Cable costs a comparable amount from AT&T Broadband - the most expensive
"digital cable" offering is $79.95/month, gets you local telephone,
Internet and more channels than some remote controls have buttons.

This makes New Zealand very expensive from a broadband connectivity POV.
