That has been my, and my colleague's experience of the service in the past
year.

I have had outages, not as speedily resolved as I would like on occasion,
but the resolution was conclusive in each case, and my DSL router has an
uptime of 9 months now with no problems. The last outage was caused by a
Pacific Gas and Energy substation going down for two hours and taking out
my DSLAM, necessitating replacement.

I expect a similiar level of reliability from the NZ DSL service.

The prevailing current opinion here is that cable has the performance edge
(for the moment, of course!).
