Don't you see that this is the problem?

Jeremy wanted a modem that IS OS dependant. He wanted a modem that works with
LINUX. There are good technical reasons for this! As an example You can control
the NAT code with Linux and therefore do more complex things than with a
stand-alone modem).

Or you could run a program on the firewall that will not run behind a NAT
firewall (ie from another machine on the LAN). IPSEC w/ ESP is yet another
example. A stand-alone modem is not suitable for everyone!
