What about an external USB DSL modem (eg, the alcatel speed touch which is
meant to have 'nix drivers soon).

How would this work? would it suit?

Sorry, but you and anyone else who suggests an external modem has missed the
point of why we need drivers for Linux/xBSD... I'm guessing you can't be a
Linux user otherwise you'd understand.
