Yeah, but all I want is a simple 256kbps (128k doesn't really do it for me)
connection across _town_ that goes through maybe 2-3 exchanges at most. How
much can that realistically cost relative to the cost of international
bandwidth.

Come to think of it, $100 a month would buy you 2 phone lines (residential)
and the isp charge to use them, then you could multilink and you would have
nearly 128k (before overheads etc etc, and then there's latency and so on).

Personally, I think jetstream would be fine if they had a tiered pricing
scheme for local/national/international bandwidth. Of course then you'd be
able to use your jetstream account to tunnel across town :) to your local
isp who might be able to offer you lower international bandwidth charges...
