The reason you only get "5 to 6k" on a 56k modem is because you're actually
talking about two different units of measurement.

The modem speed (56k) and the DSL bandwidth (128k) are both talking about
kilobits/sec. But download speeds are usually measured in kilobytes/sec.

One byte is 8 bits, therefore:
    56 kbit/s = 56/8 kbyte/s = 7 kbyte/s
    128 kbit/s = 128/8 kbyte/s = 16 kbyte/s

Those are theoretical maximums, of course; 101 other things will affect how
fast you actually download files from a site.
