Not an issue for FTP, translation occures from

    private <- Internet -> private

At each NAT hop.

Big issue for VPNs, as there is normally no translation occuring, the
private IP addresses are tunneled inside an Internet pipe. The only
practical way (without some sexy equipment) to run both ends on the same
subnet is to bridge the segments across the VPN tunnel, simpler to
re-address one subnet and route.
