Nice work Dan. Here we have a rare situation where the theory actually
worked in practice.

I started the general discussion of PPPoE, and suggested the 3com modem, as
I was concerned about another thread where modems and routers we being
chosen purely on the basis of price. Surely, if this list is to benefit it's
subscribers, it can be used to communicate the pros and cons of each
available modem/router (and supplier), price is only one criteria, anybody
can compare price and anybody can supply at "cost plus 10".

You now have a modem that will work under Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD
and (in theory) Mac. On all these platforms you can convert the modem into a
"router" by adding the proxy or NAT software of your choice. All this
flexibility for $300 - $400.

This is the benefit of PPPoE.

In Australia, Telstra allow the choice of PPPoE or PPPoA all the way to the
ISP, I want the same choice for consumers in New Zealand. Hopefully this
will occur when Telecom start wholesaleing DSL to the likes of Telstra and
Clear.

Keep us posted on reliability, the modem is junk if it fails on this
criteria.
