OK, some minor (major! :) corrections to what I've said (thanks Dan :)

I said that the modem never seems to be assigned an IP.
   This is wrong - it was being assigned 192.168.157.100/24, so from my
subnet it wouldn't respond (it was late, thats my excuse :)

I was having issues with the telnet interface - the solution is to connect
via serial port to add an actual user (the username I was using seems to be
a special case which isn't listed) - you can also set up appropriate IP's
here

The telnet interface is cool - it's the actual configuration, unlike the
web service which hardly lets you customise *anything* at all.
  And there do seem to be plenty of services, including DHCP that can be
configured in here

So a big thankyou to Dan for suggesting the serial port :)
