I am in the same position in my flat, although we have 5 computers
connected, somtimes more (damn leeching mates!)

Yes the 128KB is easily obtainable, infact most downloads actually start
faster than this and seem to pull back to 128KB after 30secs or so.
Although this might just be windows incorrectly reporting the download
speed.

Remember that speed is 128KiloBits per second, which equates to
16kilobytes/sec transfer speed (8 bits = 1 byte). Most large downloads seem
to average out at about 16.2Kb/sec on FTP.

For a server I run Redhat Linux 6.2 on a P200MMX with 64Mb ram with 2 nic's.
Our internal LAN is 100Mbit switched and the link to the M11 is 10Mbit. The
100Mbit lan doesn't speed up internet, just makes it a bit quicker for
copying files from one pc to another.

BEWARE that if one user is downloading at full speed, the linux server
DOESN'T share the bandwidth properly, so any other users that try to use the
internet get a _very_ slow response. Does anyone know a solution to this??

Also even though I am now on flat-rate (no 10Gb limit with World-Net!) I
still keep track of traffic that each client uses, just for interest sake.

Subject: Jetstart strategy and etc.

Hi all,
I'm thinking of going flatting with some friends and have the
following situtation:

There will be 3 or 4 of us, all wanting to get connected to the Internet.
The plan I have in mind is to get a Jetstart connection with Xtra and have
a PC acting as a gateway with an ADSL modem.

128Kb/s link is plenty for us, assuming it is possible to get near
128Kb/s, and the price is right. The flat's LAN will be 10base2 physically
as I have plenty of 10Mb cards with BNC connectors and lots of coax etc.
The cost of upgrading NICs and cables means a router(more $$$) is out of the
question for the moment, shoe string budget.

The two OSes I could use for the gateway are MS SBS 4.5 (NT 4.0 server +
IIS etc.) and Linux. Linux is my preference as I know it well. Outside
of waiting for Alcatel to release Linux drivers for their "Speed Touch"
USB modem, assuming it is Telepermitted, do I have any other options
other than to use SBS 4.5 ?

If I go with Linux is there any reason not to run a name server, web
proxy, Windows NT domain controller, etc.. on the same box that is acting
as a gateway/pseudo firewall ? Performance is not an issue, the intended
server has plenty of spare resources.
