As stated earlier I'm considering going from dialup to jetstart. The setup I
want is listed to below. Tom Parker had some good suggestions but before I
purchase a 3com duallink and rewire my house (and start handing over money) has
anybody done this or got suggestions on other ways to do it? Where is the
cheapest place to purchase this modem?
The setup I want.
>> Linux box as firewall/router/NAT/server
>> Buy a ethernet modem (ie a box I plug into my ethernet card)
>> eth0 is the connection to the modem
>> run pppeo over eth0 to paradise (my ISP)
>> so pppoe0 is the device that is my route to the internet?

This system would work great for what I want. Here is the results of my search
for other who might be contemplating a similar setup. (I'm yet to actually
buy the modem and test it)
The reason for the hack and what the hack does is explained here.
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,367540;root=equip,16;mode=flat
The rp-pppoe package in RedHat (and I presume other distributions) contains
the hack to get it to work Its in the /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf you simlpy uncomment
the bottom line.
# Rumour has it that "Citizen's Communications" with a 3Com
# HomeConnect ADSL Modem DualLink requires these extra options:
# PPPOE_EXTRA="-f 3c12:3c13 -S ISP"
