I think telecom could improve their act here.
I had the same problem, not knowing the VCI/VPI kept me from
configuring my modem. As soon as I knew I needed them, I searched
thru all the information I could find on telecom/xtra websites in
vain. IMO, this information should be provided in FAQ's about
Jetstream/Jetstart and made to stand out on the website. It was not,
at least as far as I could find.
3COM had not supplied any NZ specific notes or documentation with the
modem.
So I rang Telecom:
me: I need some information to get my DSL modem working with Jetstream
telecom: ..... We do not support 3rd party modems....We can't help you
with setting up your modem.....Call your supplier......
me: I don't need to be told how to set up my modem, I need to know
what the paramaters of _Telecom's Network_ are. Can you tell me what
the VCI and VPI are?
telecom:oh, um I'll put you thru to the dsl helpdesk....
10 minutes of musac - usual helpdesk story.
I went through 4 exchanges like the above before I got to someone who
could tell me the info I needed.
Lessons for telecom:
1. put the info on the website
2. In the time I wasted talking to 4 or 5 reps, they could have told
me the info I needed 100 times over.
while it would be nice if the supplier gave everyone NZ specific
setup instructions, it's not happening, so telecom could save
themselves a lot of hassle by not making the required details so
secret, not to mention the hassle they would save their cusotmers.
To my mind, the info I needed was info about _Telecom's network_ not
info about the modem, so it is perfectly logical to turn to/blame
telecom when it is not supplied. And I think it's a cop out for
Telecom to blame the suppliers. If telecom have asked the suppliers
to pass on the information and they're not doing it - that's between
Telecom and the suppliers, but it's still Telecom's responsibility to
get that info to the end user.
