AFAIK the two major USB 'types' are USB 1.1 and USB 2.0

USB 1.1 is what alot of devices, especially the earlier devices, are using.
USB 2.0 is the new(er) standard, which I suspect most new devices will
contain.

USB 1.1 = 1.5Mbit
USB 2.0 = 12Mbit.

However, your USB will only go as fast as the slowest device on the BUS, so
if you have a USB 2.0 device plugged in and a USB 1.1 device also plugged
in, the BUS speed will drop to 1.5Mbit to accomodate the slower device. And
to make matters worse, the total bandwidth of the USB will be shared between
all the devices on it.

I beleive that under Win2k you can check the speed that your USB is running
at, and also use performance monitor to track the utilisation of the USB
bandwidth? I'm not running Win2k so I can't say for sure..

This may all be hogwash, but I'n prety sure thats how it is.

Aaron.

USB has dual speed 8Mbit (i think) and 2Mb. The issue is what happens when
you
use for example a floppy disk drive or scanner that nearly saturates the
2Mbit
speed. It also nearly saturates the 8Mbit speed (because you have to decide
to
be 8Mbit or 2Mbit, you can't be both).

There was a good link posted here about 2 months ago.
