You might already know this, but since you are a "newbie", I'll mention that
not all external modems are supported by linux. Notably, the 3com Dual Link
is and is fairly cheap, the Alcatel speedtouch (or some other model, I forget)
USB modem is supported (under 2.4 I believe), but isn't all that cheap.

There is are a couple of internal modems that are supported, but one isn't
telepermitted (I can't quite remember the name) and the other has been
discussed here, I think it is the Efficient? Maybe? Search the archives.

Interestingly, the Alcatel rep that is on this list was unwilling to explain
why I should buy his modem instead of the significantly cheaper 3com.
