For those lucky enough to have competition available, I believe there is
another alternative: the Telstra/Saturn modem (or whatever you prefer
to call it) is at least a simple line/ethernet bridge, allowing to
set up whatever one can get going on a dedicated firewall/router PC
(mine won't be running M$). If the modem has more functionality than
bridging then that shouldn't matter. Considering that the modem can
be hired for effectively $7/month it looks like a bargain to me (and a
protection against Telecom making a long nose by suddenly deciding to
change the network, forcing all modem owners to invest again). Waiting -
the digger already made the hole...
