For the Alcatel USB, the instructions seem to require good current
programming skills for Linux.

I tried unsuccessfully for several weeks to get the Alcatel USB up and
running under Linux.
I do admit that I'm awfully new to Linux, and very unskilled in current
networking principles, but I do have a programming background (10 years
C/Unux, ending 7 years ago). But that modem stumped me completely.

I've got nothing against the modem - it was simply brilliant under Windows.

But after waiting for the long-anticipated Linux driver release, I did feel
somewhat unsupported due to the skills needed to get the drivers working
under Linux. I naively anticipated some kind of cushy RPM package, which
would detect system parameters and weave itself into my system without
hassles. Instead, I discovered I was needing to make many mods to linux
right down to kernel level.

There were many stumbling blocks that tripped me up, for instance
1) Kernel patches - ok for Redhat, no good for Mandrake kernel sources.
Could be problematic for other Linux distros.
2) I switched to Redhat, but I couldn't get the Alcatel speedtouch driver to
load - kernel complained of unresolved symbols, even though I followed each
of the 4 or so Howtos to the letter

Fortunately, Computer City in Wellington were kind enough to let me exchange
this modem for an Asus AAM6000EV router, and I haven't looked back since.

But if your linux technical skills are good, then you should be delighted
with the Alcatel USB.

Cheers
David
