Thanks to those that replied, I will try playing with these settings over
the next couple of nights..

but out of interest:
I am running clarkconnect on the linux box (which I am very happy with), so
it is the gateway.

I think it is RH7.1

Linux gateway 2.2.17-14

pppd is version 2.3.11
