Some features of Messenger - voice and video don't work through NAT,
unless that NAT is UPnP enabled. Normally this is because your NAT
device is translating an internal non-routable address out to a routable
real world IP address, and Windows Messenger voice/video is grabbing
your internal address.
UPnP-enabled NAT devices allow Windows Messenger to negotiate the port
numbers to be used and determine translated IP addresses. This allows
clients to share valid addressing information, and lets users
communicate by voice and video through NAT-fronted networks. Windows XP
includes a UPnP -enabled Internet gateway in the form of ICS. This is a
simple solution if a computer is used as the Internet gateway device.
Other vendors are working on UPnP-enabled gateway devices or upgrades to
add UPnP support to their current gateway products.
