My brief input, ignoring the griping on different sides.
The ISP should be able to tell if the account authentication has
completed. If so, and given that you've been supplied an IP address that
should be valid (according to one or two replies from the list) you need
to narrow down where the problem is. I'd do some pings and traceroutes
to known ip addresses - if you get replies then your DSL networking
layers are okay. Then I'd try pinging known domain names to see if DNS
resolution is working. After that... well have fun.
If the 52.255 was yours when Craig did his traceroute you've got some
other problem non-DSL related that your ISP may or may not want to help
with!
