Did you fiddle yours ? As you can see, my lo adapter has a much smaller
MTU.. from a default slackware 7.1 install. I also note that your one
has a lot more activity than mine :)

And someone mentioned the default gw being the local address and was
worried about it - this is valid for a PPP connection... since there are
only two devices on a PPP, you can use the local interface as the
gateway.. because there's only one other device it can send data it
receives.. in fact, you can have a completely unnumbered PPP connection
(ie, no ip addresses at all), and just route through the device by
name.. but that can get messy.
