Every post to this topic - and every post I have ever read from
you - is a complaint about something. This may not be the case
because I only read you post now if I must and I do feel a need
to read any post that is in reply to a question I have asked but
based on the comments others have made, off list, about you,
I suspect that I am correct about all your posts.

> After reading all the posts it seems you know

Yes I do. I did not when I asked the original question. In fact
at that point I did not know the answer at all and did not even
suspect the answer. It is amazing how a discussion can help to
enlighten one on a number of topics.

> I understand your need to complain, and feel for you in these

I have only complained about prats, like you, who complain
about my post being non technical but add nothing technical
with their post. A bit of a double standard I think. I do now
understand a whole lot more about you though - it is
amazing just how open people are in private e-mails when
they feel that someone shares their dislikes of another person.

> but I ask simply, is this list the place for that post?

This is not the place for your type of bitching so don't
bother with it in the future.

I contacted them, I contacted lots of people BEFORE posting
to the list. If I was to document all that I had done the original
post would have been many pages long - remember I did have
the same problem for six months. I felt that a reasonable person,
(you see Jeremy, I was not thinking about you in this) would just
asks if I had done x, y and/or z and what the results were.

> You didn't state you had called your ISP even once,

As I said, I was not addressing you at all so what you think
is of no importance at all.

I do not wish to change ISPs - maybe I will at some time but today
I will not be changing.

> No one on this list has the
> ability to resolve this issue for you,

Yes they do. If they did not have the ability then they would not
have done it.

> no one on this list can fix it.

Yes they can. If they could not fix it then they would not have done
so (or organized for it to happen).

> Surely you can see why I cannot understand why this issue made it to the
> list.

Yes, Jeremy, I can see why you cannot understand so many things.
What I can't understand is how, with your limited understanding of
so many things, you manage to make post yourself.

FYI - some people on this list do not post to it. Some people on this
list are able to see that problems, which at first seem simple, are actually
complex. Some people on this list understand that there are people
with some of the information necessary to resolve a problem and until
these people get together and share information then the problem will
remain unresolved.

My original post was aimed at the people on this list who could get the
snippets of info that others were throwing into the pot and come up with
a reason. It was also aimed at the person in Telecom/Xtra who could
understand this info and actually fix the problem. These people have
responded and the problem is now in the process of being fixed.

I will grant you that this is not a pure ADSL issue but, as it turns out,
the people who will be fixing it are the ADSL people at TELECOM.
Without posting to this list I doubt I would have resolved this problem.
Someone said that it is a problem for only a few people - ones who
are using Win2k/WinNT/Win98 and an internal modem. Well, that
may be only a few now but if ADSL is continued to be marketed
to the masses it will affect more and more people over the coming
months.

One of the jobs I do as a computer consultant is resolve problems
that are persistent and remain unresolved for a long time because
everyone just points fingers at others blaming them for the problem.
The only way to resolve these issues is to get everyone together and
have a discussion that usually identifies the specific problem. Most
of the time it is impossible to fix these problems properly so
workarounds are needed. These workarounds require changes to
part of the system that is not actually responsible for the problem.
In this case the problem is a bug in the OS and the workaround
is for the allocated IP addys not to include ones that end in 255
or 254. MS have one interpretation of what a broadcast address
is and Xtra/Telecom have another and it does not matter who is
correct.
