My Tripplite UPS has an extra data protection circuit in it that allows a
phone line to be protected from random surges and the like. So not only do I
get the UPS keeping the modem up and running on brown outs and short power
failures, I get some electrical protected from damage coming down Telecoms
circuits.

I guess there was some concern that an overly protective filter could
restrict the frequencies allows through, and thus cause ADSL to fail while
still allow a modem to work.

Cheers, Max.
