Every time something like this happens to me it's always just because I've
bumped the volume control on my phone :)

It's an old one, the type that Telecom used to rent out in the early 80's,
which has a wedge-shaped bit of plastic on the bottom as a volume control,
and it's *really* easy to accidentally knock it.

Hmm; have you got more than one phone socket in the house? Try unplugging
your modem and all filters and phones, and then plugging just one phone in
to each socket and seeing if the volume has gone up.
