It's even better than "not wasting a ping" as it is an out of band packet on
the PPP link and only goes as far as the machine on the other end. I believe
that the default settings also send an LCP echo request, but not quite often
enough for a stable connection with the homeconnect and telecom's network. So
if you increase the frequency rather than pinging you don't double up on this
job.
