If memory serves me correctly another name for this is tales, or do I
have the wrong end of the stick.

When I was in Christchurch I had the tale removed from my 28k8
connection and it improved the reliability of the connection
immensely, this was in a heavy industrial area right on the boundry of
one exchange area and another so the physical line length was already
long by the time it got to my place.
