If you have an internal modem or a USB modem, with NO NAT and NO FIREWALL
and NO network (just a single PC), and are wondering how secure your PC is,
then you might want to visit this site:

http://grc.com
click the "Shields Up!!" banner,
navigate to the Shields Up link (5 links down),
click the "Test My Shields" and/or "Probe My Ports" buttons.

This will scan your ports and report the result.

If it finds anything, it will provide info on how to fix the problem.

The site does offer to sell you software to fix problems, BUT ALSO provides
free configuration advice to close any security gaps it finds.
(You may have to search a little for the free advice, but it was there many
months ago when I last used it. I used the advice to close open FTP and
NETBIOS(?) ports I had open when connected via RAS/modem.)

Disclaimer: grc.com is Gibson Research, the makers of SpinRite disk
maintenance program. I have no relationship with them.
There may be better ways of probing your security.

Cheers,
Mark
