All filters are not created equal...

I initially installed my Zyxel router (about a year ago now) using two Nokia
filters on each of my phones. One cordless, one normal. When ADSL was active
phone volume dropped to about 50%, making my phone pretty unusable. I
borrowed a Nokia and a Dynalink and another Zyxel Router from work and had
identical problems. I then spoke to Telecom, who said it was a filter issue.
I borrowed a couple of Dynalink filters which made the problem worse. Now my
phones would not work at all when ADSL was on, plus ADSL continually dropped
off.

Right about now I managed to convince Telecom it was a wiring issue, after a
couple of visits they ended up giving me a free ADSL splitter. Please don't
ask your Telecom installer for a free splitter, this was a once off favour
for me.

Anyway, what I am getting at, is that with two different brands of filters I
had two different types of problems, one moderate, one drastic.

Also, I always try and recommend that people go with a Telecom install, even
with the large costs involved.

Cheers,

Dave

I've got an issue with our cordless phone, it is plugged into the filter
supplied with my RTA210, it seems that when talking the other party keeps
losing us (drop outs) it doesn't appear to be the phone on two counts, it
worked fine before we got DSL and also the problem is fixed if you power off
the modem whilst on the phone.

There is only the one phone (with the filter) and the modem on the line.

Are all filters created equal..?

In the past I have had problems getting some dialup modems to work properly
when a cordless phone was plugged in to the same house... could this be the
same high resistance loop problem?

You would think that anything with a telepermit wouldn't have this problem
(assuming that it's in fully working order)

I haven't posted for a while, so I thought I'ld share the story of a
friend of mine (who isn't on the list), who recently got DSL and has had no
end of problems with dropouts - usually DSL would bounce within an hour, and
often in much less time.

He followed the correct procedure and rung his ISP, who initially
told him it was a known problem called micro-outages and there was nothing
they could do about it. When he told me this, I told him to call them back
and be more persistant - he did, and they logged a fault with telecom.

Someone came round and looked at it, and determined that the problem
was coming from the modem built into their sky decoder. He was told it was
causing a high resistance loop.

Plugging or unplugging the modem caused DSL to momentarily drop, and
leaving it in there caused it to drop as described above.

Unplugging it completely has left his DSL working for over 50 hours
and counting.

So there you go. Draw your own conclusions.
