SNMP comes in three versions - v1 is the most common and is not at all
secure. If you leave SNMPv1 open to access from the Internet your DSL router
is exposed to any hacker wanting to fiddle with it. Close it down.
But leave it open on the LAN side because SNMP is a good way to monitor your
router - see http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/mrtg/ and
http://www.llecointe.com/ for a couple of freeware monitoring tools.

Subject: SNMP

Hi.. Ive Been reading this list for a long while now... just a quick post.
Hope not too OT for you... need to fill a gap.
SNMP.... is there anything wrong with leaving this enabled?

 ie
SNMP Status
read public
write xxxxx

I have got the impression from a number of older posts here that people
disable this for what sounded like security reasons?
What exactly is possible through SNMP? Isnt it just ping/traffic stats etc?

Thanks

Alastair S
