I myself recently struggled to get a "good" DOS/win32 (pre)compiled version
of AWK, and here is where to get it:

How did I find it?
I might have started here:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gawk/gawk.html
... which told me 3.1.1 was the latest version.
BUT gnu.org's site and FTP only contain source, which you must compile
yourself...

Then I might have tried a google search for {gawk "3.1.1" win32}:
http://www.google.com/search?q=gawk+%223.1.1%22+win32

Then I found the link mentioning the simtel link (the 9th link on the google
search).

(Strangely, the simtel search function knows nothing about gawk or awk...)
