We wasted some time about a year ago trying to get it to work.

"Standard" PPTP didn't work, but also PPTP with GRE in UDP didn't work
either.

The latter should be transparent to a NAT router as both the TCP and UDP
connections are normal translatable sockets.

A failure in GRE over UDP Mode suggested that there was some logic in the
ASUS to handle PPTP - but it is broken.

Your research may suggest that this has been fixed in some firmware
revisions or, as you say, there are some config settings we don't know about
(but I can't think of any settings that would ever need changing).
