In my experience, 3.5km is a high distance as far as ADSL in New Zealand is
concerned. I take it the tech was using an external router. It is very
common for Internal modems not to work at all at this distance, and some
poorer External routers still have problems.

For example, a recent install I did about 3 km from an exchange had a cheap
Internal modem. We tried everything to get this to work but it would not go.
I then tried it with a Zyxel 642R and it worked first pop. Later trying
again with another cheap Internal, no joy.

All up, I would not be surprised if ADSL does not work at all at this
distance. At least as you opted to have a full install Telecom should help
as much as they can, and should offer a full refund if your ADSL does not
work at the end. You do not get this assistance when you have a self
install.

BTW, I am told that he main problems with Internal modems is that fact that
they draw their power source from the already overloads PSU in your
computer, rather than having a seperate power source. This causes problems
both when far away from an exchange, plus when you are too close to an
exchange.

Regards,

Dave

Mine works OK, on 266-0xxx, didn't even need a tech round to install it.

About 2 k from the exchange

My second line was 268-xxxx, that would have been OK too, but I elected to
stay
with the older number and give up the second line.Best Regards
