David has nailed the detailed aspects right on the head.
- PCI and USB are not suited for long distance connectivity due to power
issues, they cant throw as strong a signal down the line due to limitations
from the PCI Rails / USB Cable.
- 3km is the outside limit for reasonable connectivity on an internal or
USB type in most cases.
- Routers are generally more reliable as theyre externally powered.
- In cases where a fault is logged and the fault is found to be due to
faulty customer hardware or a self installation error a charge is added to
your phone bill of ~$81.
- This can often involve upgrading a self install to a full install for
borderline cases as these are typically more reliable.
