This is simply techno-babble muttered by people who don't know what they're
talking about. (I'm not refering to you here btw, but the people that might
have said this to you)

To claim that the power supply in a PC - which are usually rated at 200 -
300W on most white box PC's is incapable of supplying the small extra
amount of power used by an ADSL modem is absurd.

If the power supply in your PC was so close to being overloaded that adding
an ADSL modem pushed it over the edge, then you'd have more to worry about
than the performance of your ADSL modem :)

There is no doubt that many internal modems are inferior to external
ethernet modems when it comes to connection reliability etc, you only need
to read the archives for this list to see that, but you can be sure that
power supply or lack of is not the reason.

Try cheap and nasty design, and the fact that most internal ADSL modems are
"software driven" like cheap PCI modems, and you start to get the picture....
