300 watt power supplies dont supply 300 watts to the 5volt rail which i
believe supplies the pci/agp motherboard etc. an amd athalon + a modern gfx
card + a few pci devices a cd burner dvd etc 7200 spin hard drive (quite a
common rig these days) will overwork a usual 300watt power supply. and some
people have 250 watts in their rigs along with random crashes - then they
add the modem...... have a look at the voltages supplied by most psus and
note that 5volts is usually more like 4.7 and plot them and go and play
unreal 2k3 and have alook how far it goes down (on massively
underpowered/overclocked systems you can usally note that where the game
quits out to the desktop is where the voltages went down to the lowest point
everything could stay stable at).
also not many people have touched on it here - but with overclocking
becoming commonplace these days front side bus / pci divider issues prolly
need to be looked at - its usually agian the pci network adapters that
suffer first.
of course interference helps as well.....
