I have a dynalink externet ethernet router.
I moved here from across the road.

The phone line quality is near new, and the exchange is roughly 300 meters
away.
Im doing the pinging on this machine.

No other traffic was being used by this computer at the time of pinging, and
it was done at 10:30 am, and 2:30pm (not exactly peak times)

it affects the speed of all packets, (shown in tracerts) the reason i have
been pinging it is i play alot of online gaming, and have noticed severe
spiking problems with the xtra network, and instead of xtra telling me why,
i am trying to find out for myself. I have sent roughly 10 emails to xtra
help, with pings and tracerts to alot of servers, but each time I get
aggrovating replys, ill show you some.

<--- i sent this to xtra ---->

<--- i got this as a reply --->

The ping times you have quoted do not indicate a problem.

I am not able to esculate your complaint.

<--- i sent this --->
if you read that, you will notice that only xtra pings fine, but the pings
to other service providers is VERY BAD
how is this not a problem?
<--- end message --->

<--- reply --->
Judging by your ping times to other ISP's gaming servers, it does look like
there is an issue.

However for us to investigate further, we require you to provide traceroutes
to these servers so we can see where the issue is occuring.
< ---end reply --->

this is after i sent 4-5 emails, showing exactly the same thing, with
tracerts included.

It is very frustrating to have all the information that i forwarded them
thrown back in my face.

>>from Brian: Ping through the CAR to a host beyond it - you will get a
better picture, thats what i did, as you can see in the above email sent to
xtra's helpdesk

the constant ignorance shown by the people at xtra is really starting to
piddle me off.

Are they too afraid to admin they have overloaded their network, have
problems with interconnection between isp's, broken routing tables or faulty
hardware.
