The update file on the 3Com support site (dlupdate1.zip) is safe to use,
in fact, it is essential that you use it :-).

The bulk of the download seems to be a mirror of the PPPoE dialer and
manual that were on the original CD (so just install that), but if you
look in the "Update" directory, there is a utility called "serdown"
which will update the firmeware to version 1.1.4. It requires the use of
a serial cable between your PC and your modem -- my modem came with one
(9-PIN).

Without that version of the firmware I was experiencing very bad
disconnection/ time-out problems.
