The difference is with the cable network, TelstraClear own the cable modem and present you with an RJ45 ethernet port (or cable, not sure which). The 827 only has one ethernet port, so you have to have your internal and external network on the same segment. As Philip mentioned, you won't be able to run NAT as it's going in and out the same logical/sub interface. Things like firewalling will be a bit suspect having the two networks on the same segment, but as a token gesture, it works :).
With ADSL on the 827, you use two ports (the ADSL port and the ethernet port), hence you get proper separation of networks so firewalling and NAT and others work properly.
