Misery

This is really a vent.

I have purchased two 3Com products - the HomeConnect Dual Link ADSL
modem and the OfficeConnect Wireless CableDSL Gateway.

Both of these products work fine is isolation :-) but due to 3Com's
non-standard implementation of PPPoE (on the modem) the gateway cannot
communicate with it!!! I had foolishly expected the two 3Com products to
communicate!

For a laugh I tried the helpdesk which must be located in Malaysia or
Singapore. It appears to be a team of very disinterested individuals who
enjoy making you register your product on line (to get the magic
number). "Jay" then gave me a case number, said something which was
illegible and then hung-up. I called back and spoke to a different
operator who, after several suggestions which failed, came back to tell
me the two products could not communicate because "NZ used PPPoA". I
explained to him that, yes, we do... that it is infact the modem's job
to to terminate the PPPoA and present PPPoE and that the gateway, which
also supports PPPoE should then do its thing but he sounded unconvinced.

I'm waiting for him to call me back.

Bah.
