After reading the above article I am prompted to offer my own observations
as to why NZ is so far behind in the uptake of broadband (well Telecom's
version of it anyway)
Telecom's Jetstream data caps and prices are a joke.
What is the point in having a connection that can use up its monthy data
quota in 30 minutes?
Its like having a Ferrari with a lawnmower size fuel tank. It'll go really
fast once around the block!
The 600mb Jetstream entry-level quota is laughable. My PC could hold that
monthly quota in RAM!
In this day and age 600mb is nothing. It carries the same significance as a
full floppy disk did in 1980.
Its half a VCD movie (usually 2 CD's if not 3) or 30 minutes of
entertainment.
I regularly make and print 200-500mb .tif graphics files, 600mb is NOTHING.
If you're going to sell a highspeed connection then surely you would make it
useable?
Jetstream should come with a minimum 5gb cap (at the same entry level price)
and jump up by 5gb for every existing price step.
So what are Telecom trying to say here?
1. We have this high-speed service available but we don't want you to use
it?
2. We have this high-speed service available but if we let you use it our
network won't support the bandwidth demand?
3. We have this high-speed service available but we are gonna make people
PAY BIGTIME to use it and that will slow down the uptake so we dont have to
address the problem outlined in #2?
