I use both methods extensively and RDP (TCP 3389) is trivial to setup.
Putting a PPTP on an NT4 or 2k box behind an M1122 is pretty easy too,
but keep in mind that there's still a good portion of ADSL users in NZ
that can't reliably use VPNs over ADSL.

But yes, if it works, I'd recommend having a VPN setup over having a
straight RDP port in the open.

I would recommend: Internet <--> VPN <--> TS.

That way it is more secure, and you don't need to worry about the ports
for Terminal Services.
