I have a DSL-504 which is much the same as a DSL-500. You can set it up
to forward ALL incoming traffic to your linux box and then handle it
from there although the traffic will already be NAT'd and that *might*
make some application filters more difficult to handle on your linux
firewall. Other than that I have not had any standout issues with this
device that have not been fixed by subsequent firware upgrades. One
advantage to using an external router is that it does not depend on a
specific linux kernal etc etc as it just routes ethernet/tcp-ip to the
linux box.

I have never set up an internal PCI card (or external USB device) with
linux so I don't know if its easy/hard compatible/problematic etc but I
suggest you have a look on this site http://www.nzadsl.co.nz/howtos.html
for some hints on setting up various devices with Linux systems.
