This can happen in a somewhat crappier way in NZ too. I'm assuming that
Jetstart is quick enough for VOIP (it should if a "voice" circuit is 64kb/s
and a cell phone even less). You have to pay telecom for a voice line as
well as your adsl which takes the shine off the idea. I guess to be viable, a
VOIP phone company has to be able to avoid this Telecom charge. You could
probably sell it as a second line for your teenagers or whathaveyou in the
same way telecom were flogging second land lines a while back.

Noone replied when I asked whether Clear's reselling of JetStream (and they do
JetStart too?) also requires that you pay for a voice line. Does anyone know?

Is there anyone in NZ providing iteroperability between the land line system
and VOIP? What are the charges like?

I had a quickish search and I can't find anyone trying to sell such a service,
only a press release that says wired country are starting soon
