Change of DSL infrastructure in NZ

As some of you know I work for Inspire Net.

On Friday last week, a large amount of our customers were moved from the
traditional DSL equipment to ERX's. As we are Palmerston North based, and
have a lot of Palmerston North customers, I am assuming that the change that
happened on Friday was either local to PN, or possible local to the various
Wellington RANs. Incidently, this change screwed up rate limiting for us,
with Jetstart users having uncapped DSL for a few days. Many thanks for
Telecom fixing this prompty on Tuesday.

Anyway, I digress.

Since then we have had complaints from our Jetstart gamers.

Before change : Gamers had good pings. Gamers could load basic webpages on
their Jetstart connections whilst playing games or have light additional
network traffic running. Pings would not suffer.

After change : Gamers have good pings. However, loading a webpage, or light
network traffic in the background now effects their ping times.

To me, the after change scenario seems a lot more logical, and makes more
sense to me. Of course the gamers arn't happy. Thinking this over myself, I
came to the logical conclusion that the ERX's have a different method of
managing traffic. This conclusion has been confirmed/agreed upon by at one
other person.

a) Does anyone have any opinions on this? Do you disagree, or agree with my
conclusion?
b) Are other ISPs experiencing this? I am talking about FastIP customers
here.
c) Is there a solution? Do any technical DSL guys at Telecom read this, is
there any changes that could be made at the Telecom end? I guess one option
is to prioritise gaming traffic, that sounds yucky and intensive.
